Holidays in Penang

Penang’s unique culture and heritage has Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences. Referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ with a fusion of the East and the West, old and new and home to come of the best cuisine you can find in Malaysia. The capital, George Town is UNESCO listed and boasts architectural styles from the 18th and 20th centuries so you really feel like you are discovering all the layers that this historic city has to offer. As well as British architecture being evident there is a host of Chinese and Indian-style temples. Kek Lok Si, otherwise known as the ‘Temple of Supreme Bliss’, is the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia and the seven-storey pagoda with Chinese, Thai and Burmese designs is truly something to be seen.

Take the funicular railway or three-hour hike starting in the botanic gardens to the top of Penang Hill for panoramic views of the island and George Town itself. The island's main stretch, Batu Ferringhi Beach is a bustling destination and shopping at the night market is a must.

Tanjong Jara Resort

Although small, this resort is simply stunning and styled on a typical 17th century Malay palace, decorated in rich timbers and local fabrics keeps this resort in line with age-old traditions and cultures with the hotel philosophy based on the Malay concept of Sucimurni that promotes purity of spirit, health and well-being

One and a half kilometres of golden sandy beaches are all that separates the resort from the turquoise South China Sea waters. There are great diving and snorkelling excursions around Tenggol Island which is a short 45-minute boat ride away to enjoy these clear waters.

The rooms offer views of either the South China Sea or the tropical landscaped gardens. The Bumbung Room is a double storey accommodation with a contemporary design on the top floor, the Serambi room is on the ground floor offering a private verandah and the Anjung room is single storey and all of these face the beachfront.
