Holidays in Hawaii

'Big Island' or Hawaii has to be seen to be believed. With the most active volcano in the world Kilauea, the earth's highest sea mountain Mauna Kea and the largest volcano on earth Mauna Low it's no wonder Hawaii is famous for its Volcanoes National Park that has created a lunar landscape.

The islands hiking trails stretch for 150 miles so you can get up close and personal with the volcanic landscape like Thurston Lava Tube which was once an active lava river. Mauna Kea, from base to peak, is twice the height of Mount Everest and provides one of the USA and the world's best stargazing spots due to its altitude, minimal light pollution and regular clear skies and you can also learn what these all mean at the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station is ideal.

You can also try your hand at watersports, golf on the world-class courses as well as important historical and cultural sights. Other must-visits include Pu-uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park on the Kona Coast, the Kealakekua Bay Historical District and the Pu'ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, the site of an Ancient Hawaii temple and other ruins.

The Fairmont Orchid

This hotel sprawls before a small bay on Waikoloa's seaside with a short-loop shuttle available to take you to upscale shops and dining such as Tommy Bahama and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and there are two championship golf courses close by. Open-air and breezy courtyards continuously remind you that you're in a tropical paradise. Palm-shaded waterfalls cover koi ponds and perfectly manicured lawns stretch to the small sandy beach and views in every direction are spectacular with your room providing one of either the ocean or the staggering volcanoes.

Staff are friendly and welcoming and do their best to make sure you have the happiest trip and are comfortable at all times. Late-night excursions to the hidden lava rock whirlpool in a palm grotto are available as are early morning floating yoga sessions in the bay or try a traditional Lomilomi Hawaiian massage with aromatherapy in a serene hale atop a garden waterfall.

Guestrooms are decorated in neutral colours and come complete with marble bathrooms, rain showers, shower/tub combos. Nighttime dining oceanfront is hard to beat such as at Brown's Beach House. Hungry sushi fans can devour all you can eat rolls, as well as Wagyu beef and grilled lobster available at Norio's with a carafe of sake almost necessary. The Orchid Court offers a daily buffet spread or you can order à la carte and the huevos rancheros with chicken habanero sausage doesn't disappoint.
